Buyer’s Club FAQ
Why is it sometimes possible to find lower prices on cameras on the Internet than in the Buyers Club?
On occasion we are asked why it is sometimes possible to find deals on the Internet that are better than what the DVPA offers. It is possible to use pricing sites like DealTime, NextTag, and PriceGrabber to find very low prices on some equipment, particularily cameras. However, many times what you are buying is grey-market equipment that has been imported (sometimes illegally) from Canada or Mexico. (See Better Business Bureau article at http://www.bbb.org/library/greymark.asp). The DVPA does not support, nor endorse, the purchase of grey-market merchandise.
While it is possible to get a good deal on grey-market merchandise, members have reported only about a 50% success rate when it comes to having a smooth transaction. Grey-market dealers routinely charge additional fees for paying with the protection of a credit card. Many times the price quoted for a product does not include all of the warranties, cables, batteries, or other items that you would expect to find in a commercially available product at a regular retailer in the USA.
Is the price really “3% over cost”?
Yes. The price we set up with companies for the Buyer's Club really is 3% above their cost and includes full US warranties. The DVPA only approves retailers that we have thoroughly investigated and concluded that they do not sell grey-market merchandise. And while you may find a lower price on a digital camera from a grey-market retailer, on other items like computers, the DVPA almost always provides a better price.
For items like computers, you really won't find a better price searching on the web. For example, a fully loaded dual processor Apple G5 costs $3,000 at the Apple store, $2,960 at some internet resellers, but only $2,816 to DVPA members from PC Mall. Same goes for software. We’ve had deals where the Adobe CS2 Suite (with all the Adobe graphics products) has an MSRP $1229, but Members pay only $1030. At the time we checked, we found no other price on the web cheaper for this software.
So does this mean everything in the Buyer's Club is always the best deal available in the world?
Of course not. It's more like a Sam's Club or Costco membership. While everything is always discounted at these stores (sometimes incredibly), you can usually find a single item that is on sale for less at a regular Wal-Mart or Target store. However, since time is money, it's just easier to go there than to spend hours shopping all around town. At the end of the year, when you add everything up, you'll find you've definitely saved more of both time and money shopping through the Buyer's Club than anywhere else.
