Q: What are the top new features in Adobe Audition 2.0?

A: Adobe Audition 2.0 includes dozens of innovative new features that give you more powerful ways to work with audio. They include:

Low-latency mixing with unlimited tracks—Enjoy rapid response as you record and mix with a new, powerful low-latency mixing engine.

ASIO support—Work with high-performance, ASIO-driven audio devices, which operate with very low latency and enhance performance by enabling features such as live input monitoring.

Audible scrubbing—Quickly find the audio you want to edit using two modes of audible scrubbing. Tape-style scrubbing enables you to find hard-to-locate edit points, and shuttle- style scrubbing allows you to scan through your audio rapidly.

Analog-modeled Multiband Compressor—Control dynamics, adjust loudness, and master your mixes with multiband precision. Give bass and drums punch while allowing your vocals to push through the entire mix.

Recordable parameter automation with external hardware support—Move volume, pan, and effects controls as you listen, and record changes to your mix in real time. Use external hard- ware controllers to make changes, which appear as editable envelopes in the timeline.

New tools for mastering—Use the innovative Spectral Pan and Phase display modes to ana- lyze your audio, the Mastering Rack in Edit View to apply multiple effects simultaneously, and improved phase and frequency analysis tools.

New Spectral Frequency Display tools—In Spectral Frequency Display, use the new Lasso tool to create a selection of any shape, adjust the color bar and resolution to better isolate a specific frequency range, and use the logarithmic display option to increase the visibility of lower frequencies.

Broader video format support—Edit soundtracks for video and then
export the enhanced video in AVI, MPEG, DV, or WMV format.
(MPEG support is included only when Adobe Audition is installed
as a part of Adobe Production Studio Premium software.)

Optimized performance—Experience dramatic performance upgrades—up to three times faster for some features—and optimized use of hard-drive space.

Intuitive user interface—Enjoy an updated, easy-to-use interface—consistent with those in the latest Adobe video applications—with workspace panels that dock and group for optimal organization, as well as new phase analysis tools and a powerful new Mixer panel. This means you can use Adobe Audition with interfaces integrated on motherboards all the way up to professional multitrack interfaces. It is highly recommended that you use sound card interfaces that support ASIO drivers.

Q: What can I expect if I have a computer with the
minimum system requirements?

A: Adobe Audition is used for a wide range of tasks in many different industries, from straight- forward wave editing to recording and mixing complex multitrack sessions, which makes it impossible to settle on a single system suggestion for all users. The minimum system require- ments are appropriate for those who would like to use the wave editing features of Adobe Audition, including cut/copy/paste editing and applying effects in the Edit View, burning CDs, or creating simple multitrack sessions. If you would like to create large multitrack ses- sions or use the advanced features of Adobe Audition, such as recording on multiple tracks, automation, sends, or real-time effects on tracks, buses, and the master fader, we recommend a Pentium 4 processor (or equivalent) with a 1GB of RAM, an ASIO-compliant sound card,
and one or more fast hard drives.

Q: How many real-time effects can I run on my system?

A: The amount of CPU power required to run an individual effect varies greatly. The effects in Adobe Audition can be put into one of four CPU-use categories: high, moderate, low, and very low. Here is a list of the effects in each category and guidelines for using them: High CPU usage: Multiband Compressor, Chorus, Full Reverb, Reverb, Center Channel Extractor, Notch Filter, Pitch Shifter. Use sparingly, one or two in a real-time session, or freeze tracks that have them applied (these effects are convolution based or use other CPU-intensive, high-quality algorithms).
Moderate CPU usage: Dynamics Processing, Flanger, Multitap Delay, Studio Reverb, Graphic EQ, Distortion. These can be used in moderation in real-time sessions, but we recommend freezing tracks when using more than a few at a time. Low CPU usage: Hard Limiter, Echo, Graphic Phase Shifter, Parametric EQ. Most systems can run many of these at once. Very Low CPU usage: Track EQ, Tube Modeled Compressor*, Amplify, Channel Mixer, Delay, Stereo Expander, Stereo Field Rotate, Delay, Sweeping Phaser. Use as many as you would like—the CPU usage for each will be very small.
The Tube Modeled Compressor is available for no charge to registered
users of Adobe Audition 2.0. If you have not registered, go to Help
> Registration in Adobe Audition 2.0.

A: Adobe Audition 2.0 offers a versatile set of tools for producing exceptionally high-quality audio content. Other users rely on one or more of the specialized tools available in Adobe Audition. For example, audio restoration specialists use the Spectral Frequency Display to visually analyze, isolate, and repair audio. The addition of the free-form Lasso tool gives you more flexibility to make selections of any shape, in addition to using the Marquee tool for rectangular selections. DJs and remixers use Adobe Audition for looping, mixing and matching songs, matching volumes, and matching tempos. Q: As part of Adobe Production Studio Premium, how does Adobe Audition 2.0 fit into video production workflows?

A:
The high-quality professional audio editing tools in Adobe Audition are a great match for the video professional. Adobe Production Studio Premium users can use the Edit in Adobe Audition command in either After Effects or Adobe Premiere Pro to quickly launch Adobe Audition when you want to edit any audio clip or the audio component of any video clip, regardless of the clip's original authoring application. After your edits are complete, save the file in Adobe Audition and it will automatically update in After Effects or Adobe Premiere Pro. Users can import AVI, MPEG, native digital video (DV), and Windows Media Video (WMV) files, and then watch them as they sweeten the soundtrack; video tracks appear with multiple thumbnails, making it easy to synchronize audio with specific frames in the video. Markers in AdobePremiere Pro 2.0 AVI files import into Adobe Audition. Built-in looping tools and royalty-free loop content are perfect for sound bed creation, and powerful noise reduction tools are great for cleaning up poor-quality audio, including unwanted noise from wireless microphones and DV cameras. Adobe Audition can also be used for dialog replacement, sound effects, sweetening, mixing, and many other aspects of video soundtrack creation. Users can also import audio (WAV) files into Adobe Premiere Pro or AfterEffects projects, and then use the Edit Original command to open either the WAV or session file (requires After Effects 6.0 or later) in Adobe Audition, and VST effects can be shared between Adobe Premiere Pro 2.0 and Adobe Audition 2.0.

Q: Adobe Premiere Pro also includes some top-notch audio features. If I have Adobe Premiere Pro, do I need Adobe Audition too?

A: Both products offer outstanding support for audio, and many of their features are complementary. The audio tools in Adobe Premiere Pro are specifically designed for editing video soundtracks. Adobe Audition offers a more comprehensive and flexible audio toolset that is versatile enough to be used by both professional recording artists and video professionals. With Adobe Audition, you can record multitrack sessions, edit audio files using sample-accurate tools, create original music using loops, mix an unlimited number of audio tracks, and work with powerful DSP and analysis tools, including DirectX and VST effects. Adobe Audition was built from the ground up for digital audio mixing and editing, so it's the best choice for demanding audio projects.

Q: Is Adobe Dynamic Link also included with the individual products that make up the Adobe Production Studio Premium and Standard editions?

A: No. Through the capabilities of Adobe Dynamic Link, the Adobe Production Studio offers users an integrated and efficient workflow between Adobe Premiere Pro 2.0, Adobe After Effects 7.0, and Adobe Encore® DVD 2.0 software. This feature is uniquely available to Adobe Production Studio owners.
