Well, it looks like the already crowded entry-level broadcast video camera arena has expanded with the two recently introduced tapeless digital cameras from Panasonic. Based on the popular DVX100 model, the newly announced AG-HMC151E records the AVCHD format using only SD/SDHC memory cards. The AG-HPX171E is a P2 HD handheld camera that features DVCPRO HD and multicodec recording. Both cameras are compact and lightweight and feature the newly developed wide-angle Leica Dicomar 13x zoom lens and a waveform/vectorscope display function.
Utilizing the MPEG-4 AVC/H.264 standard, the AG-HMC151E supports full-HD (1920 x 1080 pixels) recording and variable bit rate (VBR) recording. Another really nice feature on this camera is a HDMI output terminal. This camera looks to retail for about $5,800.
Equipped with a new 1/3-inch progressive 3CCD system, the AG-HPX171E, offers a 20-step variable frame-rate function for overcrank/undercrank camera effects, a focus assist to support HD shooting, and an HD/SD switchable output feature. This camera looks to retail for about $6,900.
After working with the DVX100 and HVX200 cameras for the past several years, I'm anxious to see how these cameras hold up to their predecessors. I'd have to say I'm most excited about not being able to even “offer” recording to tape as an option for clients.
