Director's Note

Stephen Mirrione, Oscar winning editor of “Traffic”, was a featured keynote speaker during the Post/Production World Conference at NAB last month. For me, he was one of the highlights of the entire of show. With so much emphasis on learning software tools and getting the latest scoop on all the hot products, Stephen's presentation was a breathe of fresh air. My colleague and I took great inspiration from Mirrione for his insight into the art of editing.

Mirrione's first film that gained notoriety was 1996's “Swingers”. Starring Jon Favreau and Vince Vaughn, “Swingers” gave Mirrione the chance to experiment as the editor with the film's free flowing dialogue. He shared a hiliarious clip featuring Vaughn that demonstrated the actor's uncanny ability to improvise. He pointed out the importance of directors letting actors explore the dialogue in scenes and not being completely tied to the script. One of the funnier scenes in the film was the result of Vaughn directing some misguided frustration at a producer that translated perfectly to his character in the scene.

In another film, “Go”, edited by Mirrione, the audience learned the power of suggestion. The opening sequence of the film features a very lively club scene that Mirrione inspired the director to shoot. In trying to set the frenetic tone of this movie, Mirrione felt that the original sequence lacked any sort of energy required for a film of this nature.

“Babel” received much critical acclaim in 2007 for its artistic ability to weave multiple storylines into one cohesive film. Mirrione dissected a pivotal scene in the movie for the audience that demonstrated the skill an editor must possess to capture intense emotion with little to no dialogue. I challenge you to pick up this film and soak up the wedding scene. I believe that you'll walk away with a deeper appreciation of this editor's abilities and a better understanding of what the term “good editor” means. You'll especially appreciate knowing that the director never gave specific direction for Mirrione's editing of the scene. He only spoke of the feelings he wanted to experience as an observer…powerful stuff.

DVPA Interview with Rick Graves

"Here is a 100-year old technique, and I've created something new and exciting."

To many people, it may seem that with as many digital camera and image processing systems that are mainstreamed into today's content creation industry, film has taken a back seat to many digital alternatives.  While this is true in many applications, there are still a few creative individuals utilizing the characteristics of film for unique artistic purposes and finding ways to turn traditional practices into cutting edge methods against even the newest technologies.

Graves and his team of professionals at his Santa Ana, CA studio, are able to work with extremely high-resolution images because of the excellent inherent quality of the medium format film...(read more)

What is the oldest text animation effect in film history? You guessed right. It is the opening or closing credit roll.

Traditionally a long page of text is rolled from the bottom of the screen revealing line after line. In the early days of cinematography a paper print was physically rolled before the film camera to produce this effect. Hence the name: Credit Roll.

VASST Video for the Web,
by Glen Cragwell

"I put 6 of his tips to the test within a week after I watched the video and I'm a believer. "

Publishing video is becoming an increasingly important part of many companies' communication strategy.  The growth in broadband connections to the home along with the emergence of user-friendly video formats has made video content easily available to consumers, who have demonstrated a voracious appetite for it.  YouTube and MySpace are changing the television landscape and the producer that simply shrinks down content intended for larger screens is going to be sorely disappointed in the result.

For some insight into making the transition, consider “Video for the Web: What you NEED to Know” by VASST.  Trainer Douglas Spotted Eagle articulates a brief, but profound goal for this 2 ½ hour...(read more)
