Director's Note
In case you missed it last week, the Government Video and Technology Expo was held in Washington, D.C. The Expo was a tremendous success for DVPA. Since we're an online community, we look forward to the events that allow us to connect on a personal level with our members and partners. Thanks to all you who took the time to visit our booth and tell us how we can better your experience with the association. In response to some of our member requests, we'll be adding even more significant partners. We hope to announce some of our new partners as early as January.
On the show floor, we saw the all-new Sony XDCAM PMW-EX1 which produces exceptional images in 1080p, 720p and 1080i HD. Utilizing the MPEG-2 Long GOP CODEC to achieve a balance of quality and the required bit rate, the PMW-EX1 boasts of a long recording time - approximately 140 minutes using two 16GB SxS Memory Cards. The list price is $7,790. This camera is the obvious alternative to the Panasonic AG-HVX200. I highly recommend getting your hands on this camera before you make any purchases.

Not to be left behind, Panasonic showcased several new cameras on the show floor. The 2008 models included the AJ-HPX3000, HJ-HPX2000 and the AG-HPX500. Of note is the HPX500 with a list price of $14,000 without lens. Like the AJ-HDC27 VariCam camera, the HPX500 offers variable frame rates in 11 steps between 12p and 60p allowing undercranking/overcranking for fast- or slow-motion effects.

In addition to the cameras, mobile P2 editing and transfer gear were displayed. All-in-all, Panasonic continues to convincingly push the case for editing in the P2 workflow. If anyone gets a chance to see the traveling P2 road show, I highly recommend it.

Null Objects in 3d Space, by Corey Richards

In this tutorial, we're going to cover Null Objects in 3d space (After Effects CS3)
Null objects are essentially dummy layers. Null objects come in really handy when you're working with expressions, parenting layers, or working in 3d space. When working in 3d space, if you parent something to a Null, it carries over 4 properties:
•Position
•Anchor Point
•Rotation
•Scale
Because it carries anchor point over, it gives us a good bit of control with 3d. There definitely is not as much control available versus animating cameras, but we can still do some pretty cool stuff...(read more) |

Although there are several marketing tactics that can work for your video business, there is nothing that will market your business as strongly as positive word of mouth.
The only way to get positive word of mouth is to do an excellent job on every project you complete.
The saying around our studio is often "we are only as good as our last job," which means that if we do a great job, we too are great. If we do a crappy job, then of course, we too are crappy.
