Director's Note

The New York Times reported in August that two Viacom executives stated that Paramount and DreamWorks Animation together will receive about $150 million in financial incentives for their exclusive commitment to HD-DVD.  What does that mean to you, the digital community and the rest of the general public?  A lot actually.  In a recent iMDb poll of 16,532 people, nearly 65% stated that this recent announcement convinced them to “stick with DVD”.  As professionals in the field of digital media, we're all trying to stay a little ahead of the general public or at least our closest competitor.  With this announcement concerning the renewed HD-DVD and Blu-Ray format war, it is becoming increasingly difficult to know what direction to steer our clients towards.  Let alone our own needs for archiving and mastering.

We're asked on a weekly basis by members which format they should invest their time and resources.  A month ago I thought I knew the answer.  After the announcement of this disturbing trend toward “buying the support of others”, I'm not as convinced.  A few truths I do know, however, is that Adobe has chosen to support Blu-Ray exclusively, more companies are producing Blu-Ray technology than HD-DVD and more movie studios are supporting Blu-Ray than the competition.

The bottom line then becomes, how much money is the HD-DVD camp willing to spend to continue this support bandwagon? As of today (before another $150 million buy-out announcement is made), we'd put our money, long-term, behind Blu-ray.

3D Extrude Effect in Adobe Illustrator CS3, by Corey Richards

In this tutorial, we're going to cover the 3D Extrude Effect.

3D in Illustrator is pretty cool. Although the dialogue box for applying the 3D effects may seem a little complicated at first, it's really quite simple once you understand the settings inside of the dialogue box.

First of all, 3D inside of Illustrator is actual 3D rendering so it can sometimes be a little processor intensive depending on how complex your artwork is. The performance in Illustrator CS3 has been greatly enhanced, so you probably will not run into any problems. Also, if you're using a computer with multiple processors, the 3D inside of Illustrator will recognize that and speed things up even...(read more)

Basic Lighting in After Effects CS3, by Corey Richards

In this tutorial, we're going to cover Basic Lighting in After Effects CS3.

Without lights in a scene, After Effects will automatically illuminate all 3D layers equally. It makes sure the lighting stays consistent and you can focus on your project, however, adding a 3D ligh can considerable enhance the mood of a scene.

1) To see results of 3D lights, you need at least one 3D layer.

Enable the 3D layer switch that looks like a cube icon. You also might want to enable the lock switch to make sure you accidently move your...(read more)

wondertouch particleIllustion, Reviewed by Bill O'Neil "...There is nothing ordinary in these collections..."

It might be a guy thing, but I have always enjoyed watching explosions and fireworks. Destruction can yield beautiful images especially when slowed down and examined frame by frame. The light burst, the fiery debris traveling away from the epicenter while the atmosphere progressively slows it to a halt as the flames run their course leaving a trail of smoke. The folks at wondertouch have made a name for themselves in particle based explosions, fire, sparkles, light, smoke and a combination of everything in-between with Particle Illusion....(read more)
