Director's Note
In May, we purchased a Panasonic AG-HVX200 video camera with Focus Enhancement's Firestore FS-100 hard drive. Like you, we had read a lot of favorable reviews about the camera and the post workflow using the Firestore technology. What we hadn't read is what we experienced while using the FS-100.
Several weeks into shooting with the Firestore FS-100, it failed to power up near the end of a full day of shooting. We tried all the standard steps to re-set it and nothing worked. Fortunately, we had the AG-HVX200 with the backup option of going to tape or to the solid state P2 memory cards. Having these options was critical since we were shooting a live event...(read more)
What did we learn from all this? Technology can either enhance your workflow or it can kill it…if you allow it. What are we doing in response to this “almost tragic” event? First of all, we're purchasing another Firestore to have as a backup. Secondly, we're purchasing a RAID protected hard drive that we'll dump our Firestore content onto while we're in the field. Unfortunately, Focus Enhancements does not have plans to produce a RAID protected drive. In the meantime, we're relying on the solid state P2 cards for all short form projects.
On another note, we're working extra hard to finalize a deal that will represent the most significant addition to our Online University since I took over the operations of DVPA.
As always, the DVPA remains as committed as ever to helping members work faster, be more creative, and save money.

Use Tracking Controls and Nulls to track points in After Effects CS3.
I have here some beautiful footage shot in San Francisco at the harbor. The video is a slow zoom out and pan of a sailboat going from the right edge to the left edge. In this tutorial, we want to create text and have it track and follow the boat. We will use a Null object to track the boat.
1. Lets start off by creating new text and a new solid by going to the Layer Menu. Resize the solid to act as a “pointer” for the text.

Stabilize your shaky video in After Effects CS3.
I have here some more beautiful footage shot in San Francisco of a Sunset. Even though the camera is mounted on a tripod, the wind is blowing hard and causing the camera to shake some. This is when stabilization comes into play.
1. While previewing the footage, look for items that might make good features to base your stabilization off o: something that has good contrast, that keeps roughly the same shape and position throughout the shot, and that isn't obscured by another object.
