Stephen Mirrione, Oscar winning editor of “Traffic”, was a featured keynote speaker during the Post/Production World Conference at NAB last month. For me, he was one of the highlights of the entire of show. With so much emphasis on learning software tools and getting the latest scoop on all the hot products, Stephen’s presentation was a breathe of fresh air. My colleague and I took great inspiration from Mirrione for his insight into the art of editing.

Mirrione’s first film that gained notoriety was 1996’s “Swingers”. Starring Jon Favreau and Vince Vaughn, “Swingers” gave Mirrione the chance to experiment as the editor with the film’s free flowing dialogue. He shared a hiliarious clip featuring Vaughn that demonstrated the actor’s uncanny ability to improvise. He pointed out the importance of directors letting actors explore the dialogue in scenes and not being completely tied to the script. One of the funnier scenes in the film was the result of Vaughn directing some misguided frustration at a producer that translated perfectly to his character in the scene.

In another film, “Go”, edited by Mirrione, the audience learned the power of suggestion. The opening sequence of the film features a very lively club scene that Mirrione inspired the director to shoot. In trying to set the frenetic tone of this movie, Mirrione felt that the original sequence lacked any sort of energy required for a film of this nature.

“Babel” received much critical acclaim in 2007 for its artistic ability to weave multiple storylines into one cohesive film. Mirrione dissected a pivotal scene in the movie for the audience that demonstrated the skill an editor must possess to capture intense emotion with little to no dialogue. I challenge you to pick up this film and soak up the wedding scene. I believe that you’ll walk away with a deeper appreciation of this editor’s abilities and a better understanding of what the term “good editor” means. You’ll especially appreciate knowing that the director never gave specific direction for Mirrione’s editing of the scene. He only spoke of the feelings he wanted to experience as an observer…powerful stuff.

For those of you who are planning on attending NAB in Vegas, you need to check out our exclusive NAB Preview.  We’ve included in our preview a look at some of the latest cameras, audio and software scheduled for release at the show.  We also take a look at what our advisory board members are teaching on the show floor and at the Post/Production World Conference. We’ll provide links to their class notes when they become available.  In addition, we’ll include a special follow-up on the Director/Producer track and the Director of Photography track.

By the way, you need to check out Rod Harlan’s blog DVconfidential.com for an exclusive behind the scenes look at Photoshop World in Orlando.  Rod gets the early scoop on Light Room 2 plus a sneak peek at Photoshop CS4.  He even takes viewers back stage as he directs the A/V throughout the show.

Let us know if you’ll be at NAB.  We’d love to put a face with a name.

3D Evolved
As I stepped into the four story IMAX theatre, I knew that my senses were in for an overload.  I knew that the performance would be stellar.  I knew that the event would be unique.  Still…all the online hype did not prepared me for what I was about to experience.  From the impeccable sound to the massive size of the screen to the radical imagery…I was there.   I was on the front row.  I was on stage.  I was transported to the most amazing concert experience…ever.

At thirteen I went to my first live concert and saw the upstart rock band Petra.  By fourteen, I saw Bryan Adams with Glass Tiger…then Journey, Def Leppard, Stryper, Huey Lewis and the News, The Hooters.  I was hooked.  Over the last fifteen years, I’ve witnessed countless  musical acts.  Nothing would prepare me for the awe inspiring eighty minutes at a U2 concert in South America…in 3D IMAX!

Even if you’re a casual U2 fan, you’ve got to treat yourself to this experience.  You’ll truly be moved by the sound and visuals.  With a set list as diverse as “Vertigo”, “Miss Sarajevo” and “Sunday, Bloody Sunday, ” there’s something for all music fans.

Watch the hype...

It's the end of HD (As we know it) and I feel fine
I don’t know about you, but I’m glad to see that the high definition war is over.  In the end, both HD DVD and Blu-Ray were good for consumers.  Of course, you might not agree if you’re sitting there with an $800 HD DVD player and $500 in movies…on a dead format.

However, both formats pushed the technology further along.  Both formats pushed manufacturers to develop products that were better for the consumer.  If you’re like me, you’ve been sitting on the sidelines waiting for a victor…now, you’ve got some long overdue shopping to do.

Check out Rod Harlan’s blog for a look at the end of HD DVD

For a more in-depth look, check out Tim Wilson’s article

Next month, we’ll do a full preview on NAB and the Post/Production Conference.

Until then…
