Illustrator is one of 4 creative suite applications that has the new "Owl" interface. The applications are Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, and Flash.
On the right hand side, we have a column of icons. You can see what each one of the icons stand for by hovering your mouse over them. To see any of those palettes, just click on the icon and they appear on screen.
If you want the palettes visible all of the time, instead of having to click on the icons, then click on the top of the docking pane to expand it.
You cannot drag the docking pane. They are fixed in place.
To move an entire cluster, just put your cursor in the gray region beside the tabs and drag. If you drop then in the middle of nowhere, you will get a free floating palette.
As in CS2, you can drag a single palette by its tab also.
The toolbox is now a single column on the left hand side of the screen which makes more efficient use of screen real estate. If you prefer the double column toolbar, it can be restored by clicking the double arrow icon at the top of the toolbar.
To create a new docking pane, drag that cluster bar to any location where you see a blue bar.
You can also even drag the tabs sideways now, which is a first in the Adobe Applications.
