Director's Note

Since NAB, I've spent a good deal of time discussing the future of content delivery with fellow media professionals.  The convergence of technology has many colleagues excited and nervous.  Excited because the ability to reach a broad audience is getting easier thanks to faster and more accessible broadband connections and the universal acceptance of flash video.  Nervous because the industry is changing so fast that many of us don't know what technology to invest in or how to even plan for the short term-never mind the distant future.

Well, I have personally seen a new method of content delivery that shows a tremendous potential for revolutionizing the way all of us view the web.  At NAB, Adobe announced the upcoming beta release of the all-new Adobe Media Player.  With further hands-on experience, I have every reason to believe that Adobe is about to launch an amazing new tool that everyone from the freelance videographer to the major television broadcaster will greatly benefit.

The Adobe Media Player claims to be a better way “to deliver, monetize, brand, track and protect video content. It provides an array of video delivery options for high-quality online and offline playback, including on-demand streaming, live streaming, progressive download, and protected download-and-play.”   With all this potential, you can count on the DVPA to be a part of the initial beta release.  We'll begin to experiment with content deliver and will need your feedback.  If you want to read more, download the PDF from Adobe.

As always, the DVPA remains as committed as ever to helping members work faster, be more creative, and save money.

Hang tight...more great things are still to come!

Create a Cooler LightBlast Filter in AE, by Jim Tierney

Create a Cooler LightBlast Filter in After Effects

We're all familiar with the LightBlast filter, which takes the colors of an image and creates light streaks out of them. It essentially turns the main object into an explosion of light streaks. There's a variation of this filter in some plug-in packages that creates this effect, but only along the edges of the main object in the footage. This creates an effect that's a bit more subtle, as you can see in the examples.

Recreating this effect with AE's built-in filters is pretty straightforward. First, you need two copies of the original footage. You'll be using the Screen blend mode to put the light rays on top of the original footage, so make a copy of the footage that's on top of the original and select it...(read more)

Getting the Most Out Of MPEG-2 with Apple Compressor, by Todd Gillespie Getting the Most Out of MPEG-2 with Apple Compressor

So you've finished making a great video on your editing system. Now you've got to get it out to your clients or audience so they can watch what you've created. Unless you've got access to your own theater where people can come from all over to enjoy it, you're going to need to get it into a format that people can watch on their own terms. Five or six years ago, most editors would lay their great video off onto a VHS tape, cry about the loss of quality, and move on.

In the current era of DVD and online delivery, giving a client a VHS tape seems as antiquated as communicating with a stone tablet and chisel. By now, most editors who have Compressor—either bundled with Final Cut Studio or DVD Studio Pro—will have had some experience with its applications. However, a lot of users are still unsure about how to get the...(read more)

The B&H Guide to Boompoles, by Sam Mallery The B&H Guide to Boompoles

A boompole is a curious tool. It's a microphone stand that cannot stand. In essence, a boompole is crude and simplistic, yet the engineering and thought put into their design is great.

Once you've decided to purchase a boompole, you may be a bit taken aback when you first explore the available options. What tends to surprise people is that the starting price for boompoles is nearly $100 for inexpensive models and over $1000 for the most expensive ones. It just seems like a lot of money to pay for a stick. Invariably, people want to know one thing: what makes a boompole that much different from a broom pole? For starters...(read more)

Promising a peerless high-definition video experience and oodles of removable storage space, Blu-ray Disc (BD) burners immediately command attention.
