Director's Note

April is here and that means NAB Vegas is just around the corner.  From hosting our own training workshop to contributing heavily to the Post/Production World Conference, DVPA has had an active role in training at NAB for the last five years.  Hopefully, many of you will be attending NAB this year and will be taking advantage of all the first class training being offered in conjunction with the tradeshow.  Our staff, advisory board leadership and several members will be actively teaching throughout the Post/Production World Conference.  We highly recommend that all DVPA members attend.  The wealth of information is beneficial for all members regardless of your level of expertise.  Let us know if you'll be at NAB.  We'd like the opportunity to meet you.

See you in Vegas!

The Show Before The Show Videographers Are Getting Ready For NAB Vegas!

Technology developers are busy making preparation for the annual National Association of Broadcasters (NAB) convention, which this year will be held April 14-19 in Las Vegas. And it looks like one of the most anticipated areas will be cameras, as well as related film and digital workflows that involve tools for on-set color correction, metadata and tapeless storage.

Film remains the dominant medium for commercial cinematography, yet the production community is awaiting the unveiling of some new digital cameras.
Among those is the debut of Sony's F23, the high-end addition to the CineAlta line of digital 24p systems. Sony reported that the F23 would offer 1920x1080 4:4:4 RGB imaging, as well as some new features. It uses three 2.2 megapixel 2/3-inch type progressive CCD imagers and a 14-bit A/D converter. The system will support 1080/23.98P, 24P, 25P, 29.97P, 50P, 59.94P, 50i and...(read more)

Advanced Final Cut Pro Techniques: Exporting QT and QT Conversion Movies

Whether you're exporting a QuickTime (QT) movie for archiving purposes, a less compressed file for output to HDCAM or DVCPro, or a smaller version for the Web, you need to know the settings. But you also need to know the difference between QT Movie and QT Conversion, because they aren't the same. [Note: this is for users of versions 4.5 to 5.1.4.]

Archival/Export to Tape
If you're like me, you tend to not only archive to tape in the format you shot (DV and HDV to minidv tape, etc.), but you also want a digital QT version of your film. A few years ago, I exported a QuickTime Conversion of a short film I did, in the highest possible quality, and it created a QT movie that anyone co...(read more)

Shedding Some Light on High Definition

Shooting video in HD requires fresh approaches to lighting, and those who sell lighting gear to the trade are in a great position to hear about the latest tips and techniques.

“In the conversations we've had with our customers,” said Duane Sherwood, director of communications for Lowel-Light in Brooklyn, NY, “we've found that the lighting adjustments fall into two areas, the amount of light you need and the way you light the scene.”

Sherwood said the change in the amount of light needed for HD stems from the change in camera technology.

“If you look at the evolution of video cameras over the past 10-15 years, each generation has done better with less light,” he said. “What we've found surprising is that the new HD cameras actually require more light.”...(read more)

Secrets Of Producing And Selling Successful Videos

I must say I would never have expected to find Veggie Tales, Jane Fonda, Michael Moore and sex mentioned in the same book. However, in his newest release, VideoUniversity founder Hal Landen has done the unimaginable … and succeeded. Weighing in at over 300 pages and chock full of information, Secrets of Producing and Selling Successful Videos: How to Make Money with DVDs and Streaming Video, truly has something for anyone interested in producing and marketing videos—especially special interest videos (SIVs).

I admit to thinking that Landen's sales copy for this book sounded a bit overboard. It states, "This book will help you bootstrap your own video publishing business without investors or loans ... Discover how others with no equipment or video experience have published successful video series, not just single videos … If you are a video producer, you'll discover that special interest videos are a perfect sideline that can overcome the limitations of the video service business … For pennies a day, you can have your own storefront that sells your line of videos 24/7. Or you can have others do it all for you and send you monthly checks." (Now that's my idea of work!)....(read more)
