Director's Note
Last month, the DVPA officially launched the “You Can't Afford Not to Join” campaign. Throughout the year, we'll be highlighting a different member's money saving experience with our organization.
This month we highlight one of our newest members, Brian, and his money saving experience. Brian has been a freelancer for more than a decade and knows the value of saving money. He saved $473 in just his first two months as a member. How did he do this? First of all, he purchased Macromedia Flash® Professional 8 from Adobe (a $104 savings) using the direct DVPA discount through Adobe. Secondly, he logged onto The DVPA Online University and streamed the latest Flash tutorial (a $99 savings if he had purchased the training DVD). Thirdly, he purchased the stock footage library Aerial Terrain from Artsbeats and saved $120 with the exclusive DVPA discount. Lastly, he registered to attend NAB Las Vegas using the DVPA guest pass (a savings of $150).
Saving money is not all the DVPA is about, but its certainly one of our core objectives for our members. We're so emphatic about saving you money we've introduced the “Refer a Friend” initiative. Check out this time sensitive incentive in the “New Discounts” section of the newsletter.
I look forward to hearing from you!

Who Needs Remote Control? Grizzly Pro and the Videographers Who Use It
At his WEVA Expo seminar on multicamera shooting, Minneapolis videographer Ron Schmidt claimed an unofficial (and possibly uncontested) world record: 45 seconds to deliver a three-camera wedding video. How did he do it? Using remote-controlled cameras and live switching...(read more)
What's the #1 enemy in your production studio? That's right, unwanted noise. One effective way to keep your noise floor down is to separate your power cables from your audio cables. This can be especially tricky in the back of a rack full of gear. Mindfully organizing your assorted wires with cable ties and easy covers can make all the difference. I have a Furman power conditioner at the top of my rack because it helps filter out noise. I was always having trouble seeing when I climbed behind the rack. Most rack-mounted Furmans have a place to plug in a GN-LED or any BCN...(read more)
A common misconception among first-time podcasters is thinking that sound quality isn't really that important. If the program material is eventually going to be compressed and streamed on the web, why worry about sound quality? Well, if the master copy of the show that you create starts out at low quality, it will sound even worse when compressed and transmitted through the web. If your audience has to struggle to understand what you're saying, or if the sound is so poor that it's tiring to listen to, people will be less inclined...(read more)
When it comes to production, the best quality at the lowest cost is key. In today's production world, we are seeing more and more independent producers wearing multiple hats as producers, directors, editors, etc. Another thing that we are seeing more and more of is higher end Macintosh computers coming out, with lower prices that can do more than they ever could in the past.
It's been my experience that most people think you need a high end machine to offline for HD, and that's just not the case. Believe it or not, you could even offline 24p for an HD online on a G4 laptop if you wanted to, as all you really need is a laptop, a copy of FCP, an external FireWire drive, a rented HD Cam VTR and a capture card....(read more)

Digital Video Production Cookbook Reviewed by Bil Rogers
"Professional tricks on a Shoestring". What?? For those of you who have the "no budget budget" allowance towards your new DV project, this book brings into focus not only what you can do with little to no money but it also focuses on being professional by using the basics. I don't know how many times I'll see some new plug in or new effect that I just HAVE to have. But then I tell myself, WHOA....master the basics, master the basics! That is why this book is great. It not only speaks of basics such as mastering your camera, knowing about lights, have a good tripod, get good audio but it talks about those things because they are necessary...(read more)

Adobe Captivate 2 lets you quickly develop and deploy e-training modules
Adobe Captivate, formerly known as Macromedia Captivate, is the eLearning and screen capture product originally named RoboDemo. Despite being offered by three different companies over the past few years, Captivate has survived the changes without suffering from feature bloat.
Captivate is a nice tool that does what it is supposed to do, and stays out of your way while doing it. You don't need to be a Flash guru to use the tool, nor do you need to hire outside help to create engaging and informative software simulations and tutorials. With the latest release of Captivate, Adobe has added quite a few new features, while still keeping the application user-friendly...(read more)
